  • Helen --I'm from that area. If you want a cheap and safe place to live check out Falling Waters WV. The commute isn't bad compared to the rest of the area and it's quiet and out of the way. I'm from there

  • Alan--Detrick is a small medical/signal/civilian post. It's located in Frederick which is considered sort of a country/rural area about 45 minutes to an hour from DC and Baltimore..

  • Susi--The traffin in and around DC is just horrible. The Beltway is usally clogged up in the mornings and late afternoons. But there is a lot to do and see in the area.

  • Ryan--Frederick is in the far western suburbs of DC... I actually miss it there. It's close enough to DC and Baltimore but far enough where your not dealing with the insane DC traffic unless your headed that way.. But be prepared Detrick is very very small

  • Nicole-There are many good things out there. Its country and suburban too. I wouldn't even associate ft Detrick or the Frederick area with DC at all though if you're talking about the type of people culture entertainment jobs the layout of the land etc. the really good news is you won't get into the traffic snarls and confusion nor the higher prices on all forms of entertainment except for the monuments and museums because most of them if not all the major ones are free. You can easily plan a few excursions into the district to have a lot of fun and experience American history like you can't anywhere else

  • Amanda-- If you want to live off post you may also want to look into living in PA. A lot of people even live as far north as Gettysburg and commute in. It's just a straight shot down rt15.

  • Amanda C-- I agree with Nicole I'm not sure a lot of people commenting on this are actually AT Fort Detrick because there is nothing bad about it here the traffic isn't bad etc. I would definitely suggest not living in WV or PA-you can live on post (the newer housing is really nice and when you transfer in you get first priority and will likely get newer housing). If you live in these places off post like people are telling you that is when you would come across the traffic. If you live on post you're 5 minute maximum drive from work lol. It is a very small post the "PX" is not really a normal PX it's basically a little bigger shoppette. The commissary is decent there is a pool and fitness center. Burger King and Subway but that's pretty much it. Like I said it's a very tiny post. But it is beautiful here we have a mountain view from our balcony and there are walking trails on post that are pretty also. We are about 45-an hour away from DC and Baltimore so it's really easy to make a day trip over there and see museums and monuments (most are free) also really close to PA and not too far from beaches. My husband is reenlisting to stay here because we really like it. There are decent hospitals in the area-Bethesda/Walter Reed Johns Hopkins. On post all there is is a health clinic so for anything more than regular checkups you pretty much get referred to one of these other hospitals. Like I said I would definitely try to live on post because the newer housing is good (definitely the best I've seen by far on post). If you want to live off post you would have to live a little drive out of the way and that is when you would run into bad traffic. You can't get anything decent in Frederick for BAH rent is really expensive here. Feel free to message me if you want to know anything else or even if you want to see pictures we have been here about a year and a half and I know it is really hard to find people that are actually at Detrick.
